Want to make yourself giggle? Assuming you're not one of the stupid people this will be a revelation to, of course.
Those funny symbols on top of the number keys on the keyboard? They all have names. I know what they are. The people I talk to for work? They usually don't. Here's a sample of the crazy names people use because they're uneducated dingbats and/or people who don't speak English as a Language.
- The squiggly line
- explanation point
- exclamination point
- shift 1 (this name is repeated for all remaining numbers, sometimes shift key plus, sometimes slift key - not making this up)
- similarly, 'thing above 1' (and other numbers) is also a popular way for people to exhibit their ignorance
- squiggly a
- alt sign(that's so close to being right!)
- (my favorite) email symbol
- oddly, everyone gets 3 right
- money symbol (so close!)
- s with a line through it (seriously, i've heard people say this)
- persplent symbol (no, not mispronouncing it... that's what they really thought it was called)
- circle line symbol (that one took me a while)
- nobody knew what 6 was
- pointy symbol
- up arrow thingy
- musical note (yeah, i was flabbergasted too)
- andy symbol (again, that's what they really thought it was called)
- astersplit
- asterkiss
- yeah, no one knows what the things above 9 or 0 are
- everyone knows what the minus key is but no one seems to realize that holding down shift gives you an entirely different character
- everyone knows what plus and equal are
